Frequently Asked Questions
What is an internet filtering (DNS Filtering) service?
When you attempt to go to a website, an internet (DNS) filter will block access to certain types of content, such as adult websites.
What is DNS Filter?
DNS Filter is an advanced internet filtering service mainly used by corporations.
What is the community account?
A DNS filter enterprise account used by the entire Tech Lockdown community
Why should I use the community account instead of my own DNS Filter account?
If you can't afford the DNS Filter $100/month enterprise plan on your own, this is a much more affordable option. You need an enterprise plan if you want DNS Filtering on your mobile devices.
Network filters are not 100% perfect when it comes to categorizing adult content, so we include manually crowdsourced lists in the filter policy to help catch websites that aren't categorized correctly by DNS Filter.
Can I login to the DNS Filter community account?
No, the community account can only be interacted with from the techlockdown website.
Can you see what I'm searching?
Your hostname is assigned to the same site as every other user in the community, so we cannot distinguish any queries with your account.
We enable "Limit PII Collected (GDPR)" which is under organization > Settings. When Limit PII Collected (GDPR) is turned on, DNSFilter will reduce data that is collected. This means that reporting does not show roaming client or user data.
Why should I use DNS Filter instead of NextDNS, OpenDNS, or CleanBrowsing?
Of the three mentioned alternatives, NextDNS is the best alternative to DNS filter. It is a fantastic filtering service, but it's not effective enough for our purposes.
Here's why DNS Filter is the better choice:
DNS Filter Roaming clients can be installed in an invisible way so they are difficult to disable or uninstall.
DNS Filter is better at catching adult content. NextDNS relies on manually curated blocklists, which aren't comprehensive or always up to date. DNS Filter uses various techniques to automatically identify adult content and the community account also includes the manually curated lists used by NextDNS. You get the best of both worlds.
DNS Filter is designed to prevent circumvention while NextDNS is not
DNS Filter is built for enterprise and is supported by an entire company. NextDNS is meant for personal use and is maintained by a few developers. DNS Filter has the resources to continually improve and support their service.
